Started by my daring friend Sinead Fyda, who quit her job in NYC and went to Tanzania on what she thought was a temporary volunteer trip, Jishike is a company that first and foremost teaches the women of Rau, Tanzania a skill that they can utilize to make a better life for their families. They each hand crochet bags, and when a bag is sold, a portion of the proceeds of that individual bag goes directly into the hands of the artisan who made it. The women in turn feel a direct benefit from their work. Just imagine what that does to their pride and self-esteem, not to mention the benefits to their family.
